Manjimup boutique winery Peos Estate has been crowned the top drop at the 2022 Southern Forests and Valleys Wine Show for one of their flagship red varietals.

The vineyard’s 2020 vintage Four Aces Cabernet Sauvignon won wine of the show at the awards celebration held at Tall Timbers Brewery on Friday night.

The family-run estate also won best red wine, and most successful exhibitor among the 108 entries from more than 20 wineries from across the region.

Peos Estate vigneron Vic Peos said he was extremely proud of how well they had done at the awards night, particularly in being awarded wine of the show.

“It is rare that a red wine wins wine of the show and to win with a cabernet sauvignon is unbelievable,” he said.

“Fifteen years ago we were told to take the pinot and cabernet vines out — and now here we are.”

Mr Peos said the show was the pinnacle event of the year and being selected as the winner was acknowledgement of their hard work over a tough few years.

Silkwood Wines was awarded best white wine with their 2022 Sauvignon Blanc.

Several other exhibitors walked away with class awards, including Westbound for their 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and 2022 Rose, Pemberley with their 2022 Prosecco and 2017 Sparkling Chardonnay/Pinot Noir, Ferngrove with their 2022 Riesling and 2021 Malbec, Truffle Hill Wines with their 2020 Cane Cut Riesling, Whimwood Estate with their Shiraz, and St John Wines with their 2021 Shiraz Tempranillo.

Chief Judge and senior winemaker at Houghton Wines, Courtney Treacher, said it was “a pleasure” to judge this year’s awards.

“It’s fantastic to be able to play a part in showcasing the wine producers,” she said.

Ms Treacher said it was also incredible to judge alongside an all-female panel who are all at the top of their game.

“It’s always a pleasure to be a part of an event like this.”

21 Vintages of Shiraz

Peos Estate, nestled amongst the picturesque hills of Manjimup, has long been associated with this stunning region. The Peos family have called Manjimup home for over 90 years.

Relocating from Macedonia, it was the rich agricultural soils renowned throughout the Manjimup region that attracted the Peos family.

A love of living off the land saw the Peos family establish many agricultural ventures, with potatoes and avocados proving the most successful.

A family history of grape growing and wine making in Macedonia eventually led to the establishment of the vineyard in 1996.

Vic, John, Con and Chris planted several varieties suited to this cool-climate southwest region. Today, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the hero varieties for Peos Estate, all having achieved many accolades and show successes over the years.

This year, Peos Estate are celebrating 21 years since their first shiraz and are also celebrating multiple wins at the recent Southern Forests & Valleys Wine Show. Peos Estate was awarded top honours for the following wines:

Four Aces 2020 Pinot Noir
- Best Pinot Noir
- Best Red Wine

Four Aces 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon
- Best Cabernet Sauvignon

Four Kings 2019 Shiraz
- Best Shiraz

The Suits 2019 Shiraz Cabernet
- Best Blended Red

Manjimup as a wine region was the new kid on the block, however this wine, made by the talented Virginia Willcock, received the highest of praise, and this success helped establish the area as a premium cool climate grape growing region.

As the vines have matured, with their roots firmly claiming their place in this prized region, the wines have also developed a pure regionality and distinct profile. The Estate now produces four Shiraz wines, with the Suits label recently introduced to the winery portfolio. This wine showcases the best of the Estate, and it is no surprise that Shiraz is the dominant player in this exceptional wine.

With four shiraz labels to taste and discover, there is bound to be one to suit every palette.

Four Jacks – a plush, fruit-driven wine with bright red berries and a soft, elegant structure for enjoying in its youth

Four Kings – a delightful combination of red and blue berries, with a subtle layer of spice and structural tannins, this wine can be enjoyed now or cellared to develop more complex nuances

Four Aces – a more sophisticated wine with layers of bramble fruits, white pepper and stunning French oak spice resulting in a long, structural wine that will reward careful cellaring

The Suits – barrel selection from the best batches of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is full of rich fruit, elegant tannins and oak spice. A wine to put away and forget about for up to another 21 years
